Step 1: Arrival and Registration
Your liposuction experience begins as soon as you arrive at our clinic. You’ll fill out some necessary registration forms to ensure we have all the required information about your medical history. We make sure everything is in place so that we can tailor the procedure to your unique needs.
Step 2: Pre-Treatment Preparation
Once your paperwork is complete, we’ll guide you to a private room where you’ll change into a gown. This is also the time when Dr. Afzal will sit down with you to go over the areas of concern that you wish to treat. Together, you will review these areas to make sure you’re aligned on your goals. Dr. Afzal will mark these areas to ensure the treatment targets exactly where you want the fat removal to occur.
Step 3: Numbing and Fluid Injection
With the treatment areas marked, we’ll move to the next step – numbing the area. You’ll be given antibiotics by mouth to reduce the risk of infection. Then, your blood pressure will be checked before applying a local numbing agent. For example, if the belly is the area being treated, Dr. Afzal will inject a small amount of lidocaine to numb the area.
Once that’s done, a special mixture of lidocaine, epinephrine, bicarbonate, and saline will be injected into the area. This solution, first introduced by Dr. Jeffrey Klein, ensures the area is numb, minimizes bleeding, and prepares the fat for easy removal. After this step, you will be given about 45 minutes to relax. You can have a snack, use the restroom, and take it easy while the numbing solution works.
Step 4: Fat Removal
After the 45-minute wait, Dr. Afzal will return to clean the area again and prepare for the next phase. Using a small 2mm cannula, Dr. Afzal will create small punctures in the skin and begin to remove the fat from the targeted areas. The anatomy of the body – skin, fat, muscle – is always kept in mind, with Dr. Afzal working only in the fat layer, never going deeper where vital organs reside. The procedure can take anywhere from 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the size of the treatment area.
Step 5: Post-Treatment Rest
Once the fat has been successfully removed, you will be allowed to rest for 30-45 minutes. During this time, you can eat, drink water, and use the restroom as needed. The goal is for you to be as comfortable as possible before you head home.
Step 6: Bandaging and Compression
To ensure the healing process begins smoothly, absorbable pads (known as ABD pads) will be applied to the treated areas to absorb any fluid leakage. A compression garment will then be placed on you, helping with the healing process and minimizing swelling. After that, you’re all set to go home.
