Dr. Afzal’s passion in life is charity. He often says, “In the course of a day we go to work for OURSELVES, we pray for OURSELVES, we study in school for OURSELVES, we go to the gym for OURSELVES. But the question is, ‘What do we do for others?’”
For two weeks out of each year since 2009, in collaboration with the Hackett Hemwall Foundation, Dr. Afzal makes others a priority by traveling to small towns in Honduras and Mexico. There he treats painful varicose veins that cause chronic debilitating leg ulcers on patients who would otherwise go without care. He helps educate doctors from all over the world on the evaluation and treatment of varicose veins.
As part of his volunteer work, Dr. Afzal has led groups of phlebologists on medical missions to Guadalajara, Mexico each January since 2010, in addition to mission trips to Honduras. He celebrates his birthday by volunteering for the Christian nonprofit Feed My Starving Children with his clinic staff, where they pack countless meals for people in Haiti. In addition, Dr. Afzal and his clinic staff have run the MuckFest MS, which benefits multiple sclerosis, since 2012.
