Xeomin and Dysport: How Do They Compare to Botox?

Xeomin and Dysport: How Do They Compare to Botox?

Xeomin vs Botox – what’s the difference? How do they compare? You likely know that for years Botox Cosmetic® has been the go-to injectable neuromodulator for smoothing out dynamic facial wrinkles and creases. But new kids on the block Xeomin® and Dysport® now offer you additional options for rejuvenating your appearance.

Dynamic wrinkles are those creases and lines that form due to repeated facial expressions. When you smile or frown, the skin on your face creases. Typically, these creases disappear once you stop making the expression. However, over time, the lines and wrinkles remain behind even when your face is at rest.

The wrinkle reduction specialists at Afzal Clinics are excited to offer Xeomin and Dysport as safe, effective alternatives to Botox. If you’re wondering about Xeomin vs. Botox or how long it takes for Dysport to work, contact us today.

What Are Xeomin and Dysport?

Both Xeomin and Dysport are injectable neuromodulators, formulated treatments that temporarily inhibit the nerve impulses of targeted muscles. When injected into a muscle underlying a dynamic wrinkle, a neuromodulator paralyzes the movement of the muscle for a short time. In turn, this helps smooth out certain types of lines.

In clinical trials, Xeomin has been proven safe and effective for cosmetic purposes. It’s excellent for smoothing deep lines on your face, particularly those between the eyebrows that give you an angry or upset appearance. Xeomin injections rejuvenate your face in a natural-looking way without giving you the dreaded “plastic” look.

What Are the Wrinkle Treatment Areas?Xeomin vs Botox

Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are ideal for treating dynamic wrinkles on your forehead and neck as well as around your eyes, nose, and mouth. In particular, the injectables are perfect for addressing the following:

  • Horizontal forehead lines (worry lines)
  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines or “11” lines)
  • Lines at the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Nose lines on or around the bridge (bunny lines or squint lines)
  • Lines at the edges of the mouth (smile/laugh lines or marionette lines)
  • Upper lip lines (smoker’s lines or lipstick lines)
  • Necklines (neckbands)

Xeomin vs Botox vs Dysport

First, let’s address a major misconception – Xeomin and Dysport are not cheap, generic versions of Botox. The FDA has officially recognized and approved both treatments to minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles and creases.

All three treatments share similarities, as each is a form of botulinum toxin Type A. They relax targeted facial muscles, which in turn reduces the appearance of wrinkles for several months.

Of course, there are differences. A significant difference is in their formulas. The Botox formula includes several protective proteins that are clustered around the active botulinum toxin Type A molecule.

Dysport is similarly formulated but features smaller molecules than those in Botox. Its formula is also more diluted, yet just as effective. It tends to spread over a larger area after injection, making it ideal in addressing more wrinkles in one treatment. On the flip side, Dysport is generally less effective for treating smaller areas that require more precision or that have thicker muscles.

By contrast, Xeomin is considered a naked neurotoxin. It contains only the botulinum molecule. The purity of the Xeomin molecule means there is a lower chance that you will develop a resistance to its effects.

Botox and Xeomin have similar dosing. Twenty units of Botox is the same as 20 units of Xeomin. Because Dysport features a more diluted solution, however, you’ll need more units of it to match the results of Botox or Xeomin.

The Xeomin formula produces effects that look “lighter” than either Dysport or Botox due to its pure formula. The result is that patients have facial movements that may feel more natural even while their wrinkles and creases are smoother.

How Long Does It Take for Dysport, Xeomin, and Botox to Work?

Xeomin vs Botox

Xeomin typically takes up to 96 hours (four days) for results to fully reveal themselves. You generally can see the effects of Botox after 72 hours. Dysport tends to show results in the quickest time of the three. You usually see its effects within 24-36 hours.

Typically, the results of treatment with all three last 3-6 months before the effects start to wear off. To prolong the effects, it’s a good practice to have touch-up sessions every 4-6 months.

What Is Treatment Like?

Treatment involves the administration of injections with an ultrafine needle into the targeted muscle underlying the wrinkle. Typically, the injections are not painful. Most people report feeling nothing more than a tiny pinch, so no anesthesia is required. However, you can choose to have a topical numbing cream or ice applied before treatment to ensure complete comfort.

A single treatment session normally lasts 15-20 minutes, which means you can get back to your busy schedule right away. If the treatment area is more significant, however, you will need to plan for more time.

What Are the Side Effects of Dysport, Xeomin, and Botox?

The side effects of treatment from any of the three are similar, though results do vary from person to person. Typical reactions include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Soreness
  • Tenderness
  • Redness
  • Drooping eyelid or eyebrow

These side effects are usually mild and dissipate within 7-10 days. After about two weeks, as the full results become apparent, you should be able to enjoy a rejuvenated, more youthful appearance

Which One Should You Choose?

Typically, the choice is up to you after consulting with your doctor about your wrinkle condition and your aesthetic goals. For larger areas, Dysport may be a better choice because it spreads more readily. Botox and Xeomin may be more useful for smaller areas that require more precision.
