What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a result of an underlying condition called venous insufficiency. Varicose veins are caused by weakened valves that allow blood to pool, resulting in bulging, dark blue or purple veins that can cause pain and discomfort. If left untreated, varicose veins may cause more serious health problems.

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins. Any superficial vein may become varicosed, but the veins most commonly affected are those in your legs. That’s because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins of your lower body.

For many people, varicose veins and spider veins — a common, mild variation of varicose veins — are simply a cosmetic concern. For other people, varicose veins can cause aching pain and discomfort. Sometimes varicose veins lead to more serious problems.

Varicose Veins Treatment Options

If you have varicose veins or you think you may have varicose veins, we recommend you give us a call. We will assess over the phone if you need to come for a medical vein appointment. Your appointment will be billed to your insurance company as is done whenever you go to your doctor’s office. Our insurance experts can go over your benefits before your visit if you have any concerns about your bill.

On your visit, we will do a detailed history and an ultrasound exam. We will assess if you have varicose veins and if treatment will provide you relief from symptoms. We will then discuss these findings with you. If at that time you want to proceed with treatment, we will contact your insurance and ask for prior authorization before the treatment date. Treatment is done in our clinic, under local anesthesia, causes minimal discomfort, and speedy recovery.
