When you live a healthy lifestyle exercising and eating a balanced diet, it can be frustrating to deal with stubborn fat. CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive treatment that can help reduce stubborn fat so that you can achieve the body contours you desire.
How Does CoolSculpting Work?
CoolSculpting® uses a process called cryolipolysis to help reduce stubborn fat. CoolSculpting® uses controlled cooling technology to freeze fat cells, which then die and are processed out of the body over the next few weeks. Because the treatment destroys the treated fat cells, they are gone for good.
Cryolipolysis isn’t surgery and doesn’t use needles. The device holds the part of your body your doctor wants to target between two paddles. The paddles cool quickly and your doctor leaves them in place for about 35 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes. During that time, the process destroys about 20%-25% of the fat cells in the area that’s targeted.
The final results may not show up for a few months, but you may start to see some changes within a few weeks. Your immune system clears out the dead fat cells slowly over this time.
But how does coolsculpting work? Scientists came up with the idea for cryolipolysis by studying what happens to fat during frostbite. Fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin. The cryolipolysis device cools your fat to a temperature that destroys it while leaving your skin and other tissues unharmed.
What Can I Expect During My Treatment?
Once the target areas have been identified, a gel pad will be used to help protect your skin. Then, the applicator will be placed, and the machine will draw up the fat roll using suction. You may feel a tugging sensation as this occurs. The CoolSculpting® machine will then use controlled cooling to lower the temperature of the target site. The machine keeps the temperature within a precise range to freeze the fat cells without harming the surrounding tissues. You can relax during your treatment, which can take between 30 and 60 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the area being treated.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
CoolSculpting® is FDA-cleared to reduce fat in nine different areas of the body, including the following:
- Double chin
- Upper arms
- Bra roll/back fat
- Inner and outer thighs
There are different applicators available to ensure a proper fit on the treatment site. At Afzal Clinics, we also offer Dual Sculpting, which uses two CoolSculpting® machines at once to reduce twice the fat in half the time, Dual Sculpting is most useful on areas that require two sides to be treated, such as the upper arms or the thighs, to ensure symmetry.
Are There Other Treatments Available?
Not every patient is a good candidate for CoolSculpting®. If you have larger fat deposits that may not be as easy to treat, we also offer in-office liposuction. This procedure uses local anesthetic and power-assisted liposuction, allowing you to go home right after your treatment. Some patients may even be able to return to work the next day.
Other procedures to remove, shrink, or break down fat include:
- Liposuction, a type of plastic surgery that removes fat deposits
- Heat treatments (SculpSure) that use lasers to remove fat
- Deoxycholic acid injection (Kybella), which breaks down fat cells (used only for the chin area)
- A radiofrequency procedure (truSculpt, Vanquish) that kills fat cells with heat
- A cold laser treatment (Zerona) that shrinks fat cells
- Electromagnetic treatment (Emsculpt), a procedure to break down fat cells and tighten muscles.
